10.13.09-10.16.09 Questions of the Week

There will be five questions this week. The first two questions will deal with writing and evaluating expressions. The next two questions will be about square roots, and the final question will be an exponential pattern.

1. Southeast Middle School is selling coupon books to raise money. The food book costs $5.00, and the clothes book costs $7.75. Our class sold 16 food books and 34 clothes books. Write an expression to determine the amount of money our class collected.

2. Mr. Crawford has to have his car repaired after a wreak. The cost for parts is $350. The cost for labor will be $30 an hour. Write an expression to determine how much Mr. Crawford will have to pay to have his car repaired.

3. Mr. Smith wants to replace a damaged piece of crown molding that runs around his square ceiling. If the area of the ceiling is 121 square cm, what length of crown molding needs to be purchased?

4. Kelly is planting a square garden in her back yard. The area of her garden is 49 square feet. What is the length of one side of her garden?

5. You receive an e-mail telling you to forward it to exactly 5 people. If each of those people send it to 5 other people. If the pattern continues as described, how many people will receive the e-mail in round 6?
